No. 18 - Fort Worth, Texas, USA to Shanghai, China

Suspended Mail

Dated 06 December, 1941, this cover was posted one day before the attack on Pearl Harbour. Instead of going west towards the Pacific, it wound up in Miami, Florida. There it was examined by Examiner #1657 and re-sealed with a closer label. It was probably then sent to the Miami Post Office where the two line "RETURN TO SENDER/SERVICE SUSPENDED" hand stamp was applied and the cover returned to Fort Worth.

The Miami Censorship Station, except for a token effort on 12 December, 1941, began to censor mail on 15 December. This was probably one of the first covers to pass through that station. Shanghai was occupied by the Japanese Army on 08 December, 1941.
