Suspended Mail

Dated 21 April, 1940, this cover was sent to the Ottawa Censor Office where an "EXAMINED BY CENSOR 8" hand stamp was applied. Mail Service from Canada to Sweden was suspended due to the invasion of Denmark and Norway on 09 April, 1940. A hand stamp "MAIL SERVICE SUSPENDED" was applied at the Ottawa Post Office and the cover was sent to the Dead Letter Office which returned it to the sender.

It isn't known how long this suspension of mail service lasted. It is known that by November, 1942 it had been lifted. Air Mail was going from Canada to Sweden using the Scotland to Sweden air connection. These were dangerous flights, made at night, without lights over German occupied territory A number of Aircraft were lost to German Fighters.
