No. 4 - London, Great Britain to Helsingfors, Finland

Suspended Mail

Dated 12 April, 1940, this cover was sent to the Liverpool Censor Office where the P.C. 66 closer label was attached by Censor #3230. At some point in its journey, the cover was halted and sent to the Liverpool Post Office where two hand stamps were applied. "POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDED" and "RETURN TO SENDER". It was then returned to its sender.

Mail service from Great Britain to Finland had been suspended during the Russo-Finnish War but a Peace Treaty had been signed on 12 March, 1940. The lifting of that suspension was possibly in the works when the Germans invaded Denmark and Norway on 09 April, 1940. It isn't known how long the mail was suspended but is believed to have been lifted in late 1940. It all came to a crashing halt again on 22 June, 1941, when Germany invaded Russia with its new best friend, Finland. Mail Service to Finland resumed in February, 1945.
