No. 24 - Zurich, Switzerland to New York, NY, USA

Suspended Mail

Dated 22 July, 1944, this cover was posted at Zurich for delivery to New York but only made it as far as Paris, France and the German Army Censor Station there. After examination, a Paris "X" closer label was applied it was returned to Zurich. There, a "ZURUCK RETOURI/PO5TVERKEHR EJNGESTELLT/SERVICE POSTAL SUSPENU" hand stamp was applied and the cover returned to the sender.

This cover wasn't suspended due to policy but due to the chaos of war. After its examination by the German Censor Staff, they likely had no way to send it on to Lisbon, Portugal. The Allied Forces had landed in France on 06 June, 1944 and were driving for Paris at a rapid rate. The south of France would be invaded on 15 August and Paris fell 01125 August, 1944.
