No. 13 - Susanville, California, USA to Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy

Suspended Mail

Dated 13 November, 1941, travelling by Air Mail, this cover was intercepted in Bermuda by the British Censor Office. It was examined by Examiner #4977 who applied a PC9O Closer label and detained it. It was returned as per machine cancel "RETURN/TO SENDER/SERVICE SUSPENDED/NEW YORK, N.Y./AUG 7/1942".

During this covers transit to Bermuda, it was caught in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 07 December, 1941 and the declaration of war on the USA by Germany and Italy on 11 December, 1941. Mail Suspensions were immediately imposed on these nations by the USA and the British in Bermuda, now allies of the USA, were glad to oblige.
