Great Britain Issues the World’s First Pre-Paid Adhesive Postage Stamps

This exhibit by Peter Newroth explains the design and use of the world’s first pre-paid postage stamps in 1840 which permanently changed the way mails were used. The idea was first proposed by Sir Roland Hill and the stamps had an immediate impact on literacy and the way that people were able to to communicate with each other.
